The long-anticipated opening of Fire ’n’ Ice Sports Arena and its adjacent hotel is moving closer to the finish line. While the developer had been shooting for a September opening, utility problems involving electrical power and water line issues, have delayed the construction process.
A firm opening date has not yet been announced, however rink officials have been providing weekly updates on the construction progress and have acknowledged the community’s patience and support as issues are being resolved.
“One of the challenges we’re still working through is water leaks within the facility. We’ve now addressed approximately 70% of the identified leak issues, and our team continues to work diligently on the remaining areas,” according to a Sept. 15 announcement.
Officials assured neighbors that steady progress is being made and the team is committed to getting everything completed properly.
“Every major item required to open is already at the arena. Our team is working swiftly with our construction partners to finish the remaining work as quickly and safely as possible, so we can deliver a facility that meets the high standards we promised our community,” according to an earlier update.
When it opens, the 250,000-square-foot multi-sport complex will be home to two NHL-sized ice rinks and an additional synthetic training rink for practices, five multi-sport courts with NBA hardwood floors to support basketball, volleyball, pickleball, along with a variety of other sports.
Earlier this year, former NHL player Troy Mick was hired as head coach of the Phoenix Inferno, the newest expansion team set to begin its 2026-2027 inaugural season in the North American 3 Hockey League, a junior hockey league under USA Hockey. Mick also serves as director of SSS Phoenix Hockey Academy, housed at the arena, combining professional-grade athletic development for grades 8–12 with flexible, college-preparatory academics.
The facility will also offer league play in a variety of sports, along with drop-in play and clinics, camps and tournaments for all skillsets. A fitness center and spa will be available for community use, along with dining venues open to the public. The venue will also host teen nights and concerts/events.
The adjacent 150-room Fire ‘n’ Ice Hotel will serve as a tournament and travel-stay hotel for academy student-athletes and visiting teams, with suites, meeting nooks, and on-site amenities adjacent to the venues.
